The Osaka-Kansai Expo has achieved an incredible milestone, surpassing 10 million visitors in just 78 days since its opening. This remarkable feat was celebrated with a special ceremony at the venue on June 29th, underscoring the expo’s massive popularity among locals and tourists alike.
Ceremony Highlights: A Summer Invitation
The ceremony was attended by Secretary General Ishige, who expressed amazement at the rapid surge in attendance. “The number of visitors has exceeded our expectations, allowing us to reach 10 million faster than anticipated,” he said. “As summer kicks into full gear, we warmly invite everyone to enjoy the Summer Expo and all the exciting experiences the Osaka-Kansai Expo has in store.”
The 10 Millionth Visitor: The Asano Family
The honor of being the 10 millionth visitor went to the Asano family from Yamagata City, Yamagata Prefecture. Led by Mr. Kazuhiro Asano (46), the family visited the expo to celebrate both their daughter Yua’s birthday and Mr. Asano’s own birthday. As a special reward, they received a “Summer Pass” for unlimited entry from July 19th to the end of August, along with heat-relief items like parasols and hats. To commemorate this milestone, a unique stamp was also unveiled during the ceremony.
Record-Breaking Day: June 28th Sees 195,000 Visitors
Just one day prior, on June 28th, the expo recorded its highest single-day attendance yet, with approximately 195,000 visitors. This included 177,000 general visitors and 18,000 related personnel, surpassing the previous record of 187,762 visitors set on May 31st. By the end of June 28th, the cumulative total since the expo’s opening reached 9,856,285 visitors, with 8,489,701 being general attendees.
The spike in attendance on June 28th was likely driven by the “JAPAN FIREWORKS EXPO,” a dazzling event featuring fireworks from several companies, including those from the renowned “Omagari Fireworks” competition—one of Japan’s top three fireworks festivals.
