A swarm of earthquakes has been shaking the waters near the Tokara Islands, with over 500 tremors recorded in just eight days. As of today, June 28, 2025, the region has experienced 13 more earthquakes, and the activity shows no signs of stopping. Since June 21, this relentless seismic event has kept the islands on edge, with a total of 515 earthquakes of intensity 1 or higher observed by 11 a.m. today. Among these, Akusekijima, one of the islands, has felt significant shaking, recording six quakes at intensity 4.
The Tokara Islands, a remote chain of seven inhabited islands south of Kyushu, are home to 669 residents. Remarkably, despite the barrage of tremors, no damage or injuries have been reported so far. This isn’t the first time the region has faced such activity—back in 2021, Akusekijima endured an earthquake with an intensity of 5+, causing very strong shaking and highlighting the area’s seismic risks.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) warns that the high frequency of earthquakes is likely to persist. They urge residents to remain cautious and prepared for potential earthquakes that could bring strong shaking in the days ahead.
