TOKIO Announces Disbandment Due to Member’s Compliance Violation

On June 25, 2025, the Japanese idol group TOKIO shocked fans by announcing their disbandment on their official website. The group, made up of members Shigeru Joshima, Masahiro Matsuoka, and Taichi Kokubun, declared, “We have decided to disband as of today.”

Official Statement on Disbandment

In a statement titled “Notice Regarding the Disbandment of TOKIO,” the group confirmed, “The group ‘TOKIO,’ consisting of members Shigeru Joshima, Masahiro Matsuoka, and Taichi Kokubun, has decided to disband as of today.”

Reason Behind the Disbandment

The decision stems from a compliance violation by member Taichi Kokubun. The group issued a heartfelt apology: “Due to Taichi Kokubun’s recent actions that violated compliance, we have caused significant inconvenience and concern to all related parties. We take this matter very seriously and sincerely apologize once again. We are truly sorry.”

They elaborated, “After discussing our intentions as members, we concluded that, given the current circumstances, it would be difficult to regain the trust and support of our fans and continue activities as the group ‘TOKIO.’ As a result, we have decided to bring our group activities to an end.”

Apology to Fans and Stakeholders

TOKIO expressed deep regret for the sudden news: “To the countless fans who have supported us since our CD debut in 1994, to all related parties, to the media and sponsor companies who provided us with opportunities and support, and to the local communities—starting with Fukushima Prefecture—who warmly embraced our activities, we sincerely apologize for this abrupt announcement.”

Plans Moving Forward

Looking ahead, the members shared, “First, we will offer our apologies and greetings to all related parties. Then, each of us will take time to reflect and earnestly consider how we can contribute to those who have supported us over the years.”

A Final Word of Gratitude

The group concluded with a message of thanks: “To everyone who has been involved with TOKIO over the past 31 years, we offer our heartfelt gratitude. Thank you so much.”

A Look Back at TOKIO’s Legacy

TOKIO was a beloved Japanese idol group formed by Shigeru Joshima (guitar), Taichi Kokubun (keyboard), and Masahiro Matsuoka (drums), under the management of STARTO ENTERTAINMENT. They burst onto the scene with their debut single “LOVE YOU ONLY” in 1994 and maintained a strong presence in the music industry with numerous CD releases and concerts. In 2006, they released the popular track “Sorafune / do! do! do!”.

Beyond music, TOKIO gained widespread fame through the variety show “ザ!鉄腕!DASH!!” (a program featuring the members tackling various challenges and projects with expert-level skills), which began airing in November 1995. They also appeared in other popular shows like “5LDK” and “TOKIO Kakeru.”

The group faced significant changes over the years. In May 2018, former member Tatsuya Yamaguchi left following the termination of his agency contract. In March 2021, Tomoya Nagase also departed. Shortly after, in April 2021, the remaining members launched TOKIO Inc., marking a new chapter—until this disbandment announcement.
