Sumida park is a famous spot for cherry blossoms that have been around since the Edo period. There are approximately 343 cherry blossom trees on the Sumida ward side and about 600 on the Taito ward side, with approximately 1,000 cherry blossom trees in total, including Somei Yoshino, Oshima-zakura, and Sato-zakura, blooming beautifully.

The beautiful cherry blossom trees lining the embankment are known as “Sumida River Sakura” and have been counted as one of the five famous cherry blossom viewing spots in the Edo suburbs, along with Asukayama in Oji, the Tamagawa Josui canal in Koganei, Goten-yama hill in Shinagawa, and Kanei-ji temple in Ueno since the mid-Edo period. The first cherry tree was planted here by the fourth Tokugawa shogun, Ietsuna. He transplanted cherry trees from Hitachi Province (Ibaraki Prefecture).
