How to say “Cow” in Japanese

Ushi (牛)

romaji :Ushi

hiragana:うし

katakana:ウシ

The cow is Ushi in Japanese. Cattle are also Ushi.
When we call the female cow that is cattle, it’s Meushi(雌牛). A male cow that is a Bull is Oushi (雄牛).

・あの牧場には牛がたくさんいる
Ano Bokujou niha ushi ga takusan iru
“There are a lot of cows in that ranch.”

Gyuniku (牛肉)

Beef is Gyuniku in Japanese, and Gyu also makes sense.

Beef and rice called Gyudon (牛丼) is very famous in Japan and sold at a reasonable price for eating out. Typical shops are Yoshinoya (吉野家), Matsuya (松屋), and Sukiya (すき家).

・今日は牛肉が食べたい気分だな
Kyou ha gyuniku ga tabetai kibun dana
“I feel like eating beef today.”
